Yaquina Head Light is one of the most visited Lights on the Oregon Coast and boasts 350,000 guests to Yaquina Head each year, with 98,000 of those visiting the lighthouse.Īlthough this still-operating lighthouse is open to the public, you cannot climb to the top where the light is located Coast Guard regulations forbid it.Īlso, it is only open during daylight hours. The light was automated in 1966 and can be seen from 19 miles out to sea. Some say that it was originally supposed to be built at Cape Foulweather, which is about 6 miles north. Reedsport is known as the “heart of Oregon dunes” because it’s the largest coast sand dunes in North America. It’s a beautiful drive! Mile 211: Reedsport The highway jets a little bit inwards through trees in order to go around around the dunes. Central Oregon Coast Mile 233: Oregon Dunes Scenic Area Look for signs to Charleston and Ocean Shores to take you to: Sunset Bay State Park for camping, Shore Acres State Park for botanical gardens with highest waves in Oregon, Cape Arago Lighthouse, and Simpson Reef to see sea lions. You can find hotels, restaurants, casinos. It’s a larger city feel coming from charming small towns. Mile 237: Coos Bay/North BendĬoos Bay is the largest city on the Oregon coast. Face Rock State Park Scenic Viewpoint is a great loop for photos on the coast. Make a stop at Facerock Creamery for great cheese tasting and sandwiches. Washed Ashore is a nationally recognized art studio making art out of old marine debris. Make sure to check the hours before heading there! Mile 278: Bandonīandon is an old town, port and Coast Guard Station with unique shops and art sudios, restaurants, hotels. Mile 296: Cape Blanco LighthouseĬape Blanco is the oldest standing lighthouse on the Oregon coast and the most western point in Oregon (2nd in the nation)! You will also see Homestead-Hughes House, a beautiful 1898 Victorian house that you can tour from April to October. Port Orford Heads State Park has trails and a Coast Guard Museum. The town has a colorful pier with amazing views of the water, whale watching in the bay from Battle Rock Wayside, and great bird watching. It’s still a fishing village but does not have a harbor as the fishing vessels are hoisted form the water. Port Orford is the oldest town on the Oregon coast. There’s a unique feral cat sanctuary in town developed in 1992 by local a resident where the shelter is built to look like houses and painted bright happy colors. Theres a museum displaying the local history of the area, Curry Historical Museum. If you take the turnoff and follow an unimpressive drive up a hill, you’ll reach the edge of the Cape, which is the 2nd highest point on the Oregon coast! The views are stunning! Mile 328: Gold BeachĪ small town with art shops, jet boat tours on the Rogue River, fishing, hiking, agate (a common rock formation) hunting, and beachcombing. No need to stop because it’s pretty anti-climatic with hard to find trails. This is the tallest bridge in Oregon at 345 feet.

There are amazing tide pools and an offshore island with puffins. After driving through the forests, this should be your first stop and introduction to the jaw-dropping Oregon coast! Get out to stretch your legs, walk on the expansive beach and enjoy the sounds of the ocean.
